About us
Like all good ideas, this one started with a conversation where all deep and meaningful conversations happen - during a long car ride. We were talking about what we’d want done with our remains, and my husband was clear on one thing: he didn’t want MDF, and he couldn’t justify an expensive hardwood coffin…. “I would want you to build me a simple pine box”.
That sparked something. I started looking into caskets while there are many beautiful options out there I kept coming back to the idea of a flatpack casket that people could build themselves. There’s something powerful about creating with your own hands, turning raw materials into something meaningful. A connection to nature through a simple, functional, and personal option. For some people it is a basic pine box or for others it is about a canvas for their creativity.
The idea wouldn’t go away. Every time I mentioned it in conversation the response was the same “I’d want one of them too”. So after years of mulling it over, I finally decided to make it happen.
Luckily, I’m surrounded by talented carpenters, and after countless discussions, problem-solving, and prototypes, The Casket Project was born. Now, we’re proud to offer self-build caskets that are designed and made in Australia from Australian grown timber.
